I wish that I, my sorrows fully

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

I wish that I, my sorrows fully,
In a single word, could convey,
I would trust it to the merry winds,
To merrily bear it away.

They would carry to you, my darling,
A word, that is so sour,
You'd hear it in every place,
You'd bear it every hour.

And as soon as the nightly hour
Has closed your eyes in sleep,
That word of mine would follow you,
And, in your dreams, will creep.
