What does this lonely tear want?

Für die Liebe!

What does it want, this lonely tear?
It troubles my sight.
It is a tear from yonder year
That clings to my eye so tight.

It had many sisters who were bright,
They all dissolved in vain,
Dissolved in wind and night,
With my joy and with my pain.

The little blue stars
Have also dissolved like mist,
They who smiled those joys and scars,
Deep into my breast.

My love itself dissolved, and how?
Alas, like an empty breath!
Old, lonely tear, you too now
Must dissolve in death!
