I wandered under the trees

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

I wandered under the trees,
Alone with all my pain,
When one of my oldest dreams,
Stole into my heart again.

" This word, who taught you to say it,
Oh, you, birds in the breezy sky?
Silence! Lest my heart should hear it,
And once more with anguish sigh. "

" A singing maid came over here,
And as she came, her song we heard;
And in her singing we could hear
The beautiful golden word. "

" Oh, how could you tell such a story?
You birds, wondrous and sly
You wanted to capture my misery,
But in none confide will I. "
