Did not my pallid face betray

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

Did not my pallid face betray
My love's miserable fate?
And would you force my haughty lips,
Beggar-like, to supplicate?

But those lips are far too haughty,
They can but kiss and jest,
They may utter a scornful word,
While my heart bleeds in my chest.
