The mountain echo

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

At slow pace, across the valley,
Sadly rode a horseman brave:
" Ah! Do I travel to my mistress's arms,
Or to the darksome grave? "
The mountain echo answer gave:
" The darksome grave! "

And further still the horseman rode,
And a sigh broke from his breast:
" If I must go to the grave so soon,
Perhaps in the grave is rest"
And the echo confessed:
" In the grave is rest! "

The weary horseman wept a tear,
And from his cheek it fell.
" If in the grave there is rest,
Then the grave is well. "
And the echo repeated as well:
" The grave is well! "
