A palace legend

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

In Berlin in an old palace
We can see, cut in stone,
How a horse sodomizes a woman,
Who takes her pleasure with a groan.

And it seems that this Lady
Was the illustrious mother
Of our princes lineage; The seed,
Apparently retained its power.

And indeed, there was little
In them of human nature !
And in a certain Prussian King
There was a trace of horsy figure.

There is something brutal in his talk,
His laughter sounds like a neighing,
He thinks and devours like a horse,
Every bit animal, there is no denying!

You alone, out of this lineage,
Youngest offspring can feel and reason
Like a human, you have a genuine
Christian heart and are no stallion.
