My heart is oppressed, for with grief

My heart is oppressed, for with grief,
I remember the good old life;
The world was cozy beyond belief,
And life went on with little strife.

But now the world is madly driven:
A constant struggle, a constant hell!
Dead is the good Lord up in Heaven,
Below, the devil died as well.

Now all appears so troubled and drear,
People wear a cold anxious face,
And should love one day disappear,
No where would be a resting place.
