Looking from the window.

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

Fair Hedwig was standing at the window,
Pale Henry was passing by, below her.
She said, half loud: " Dear God, this man below,
Appears to me, as pale as a specter! "

Pale Henry cast a yearning look above,
At the window, hoping he could see her.
Fair Hedwig became tormented with love,
And she turned as pale as a specter.

Love-sick, now stood fair Hedwig every day
At the window, awaiting Henry dear.
But soon in pale Henry's arms she did lay,
Nightly, at the time when specters appear.
